Murphy Back on Track with Sizzling Goodwood Performance

Whether for positive or negative reasons, champion jockey Oisin Murphy has regularly hit the headlines in 2025. Having been hit by a drink-driving charge, which resulted in a significant fine and strict new rules placed on his riding licence, Murphy has refocused his efforts on what he does best – riding winners at the track.

Following a successful Royal Ascot, which produced five winners and a second-place finish in the jockeys’ table, Murphy set his sights on the second of the summer’s five-day fixtures. As ever, Murphy boasted an enviable book of rides heading into the Qatar Goodwood Festival, and, as ever, he didn’t disappoint.

Six Wins Good for Top Spot

Having settled for second place in the jockeys’ standings at the Royal Meeting, Murphy went one place better in Sussex. The 29-year-old rider kicked off with a double on the opening day, partnering the Andrew Balding-trained Stellar Sunrise to victory in the Maiden on the card and winning the concluding handicap aboard Dubai Treasure for Saeed bin Suroor.

Five mounts on Day 2 produced nothing better than a pair of sixth-place finishes, but the Irishman added to his haul on Day 3, when teaming up with another Balding juvenile, Sir Albert, in the Nursery Handicap.

Moving onto Day 4, Murphy sat level on three wins. By the end of the seven-race card, a quick-fire hat-trick had propelled him into a clear advantage. Murphy’s easiest win of the week came in the opening Coral Goodwood Handicap, as Hughie Morrison’s Kyle Of Lochalsh moved serenely through the soft ground to rout the field by almost 10 lengths.

Seagulls Eleven was made to work harder in race two but held on well to hand Murphy his highest-class victory in the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes. Another Balding runner, Fox Legacy, completed the hat-trick with a resounding success in the Bentinck Conditions Stakes.

Two clear of Moore at the start of Day 5, Murphy sat out the Saturday card due to a suspension. The Ballydoyle number one moved to within one when claiming the Maiden aboard odds-on chance Isaac Newton. However, Moore couldn’t add to that as Murphy held on to finish one clear of his big rival. Charles Bishop and Tom Marquand finished in a tie for third with three wins apiece.

Balding Pips Beckett in Trainers’ Standings

The 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival was certainly a meeting to remember for Ralph Beckett. Having improbably saddled two of his runners to finish in a dead heat in the Oak Tree Stakes, the Kimpton handler produced the biggest shock in British Group 1 history, when 150/1 chance Qirat claimed the Sussex Stakes. Push The Limit’s victory in the Coral Pipped At The Post Winners Handicap took Beckett’s tally to four. However, that was only good enough for second spot in the trainers’ table, as he lost out on countback to Andrew Balding.

In addition to the three Murphy-ridden winners, Balding provided William Buick with his only victory of the week in the final race on Day 5. Getting up to score by a head in that Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap event, the well-supported Gladius delighted favourite backers and sent Balding to the top of the table. Aidan O’Brien and William Haggas each registered three wins to share third place.

Wide-Open Fixture for Owners and Sires

While it took six wins to top the jockey standings and four to win the trainers’ race, only three were required to finish as the top owner. The big guns of Coolmore, Juddmonte, and Shadwell were the only owners to hit the target more than once. Bagging a Group 1 double with Scandinavia in the Goodwood Cup and the brilliant Whirl in the Nassau Stakes, Coolmore edged into a decisive lead when Isaac Newton claimed the penultimate contest on the final day.

The Qatar Goodwood Festival was one of the most open meetings of the season for the sires, with the 38 events shared among 37 different stallions. Juddmonte’s Kingman was the only sire to strike more than once over the five days.
